Tea Time with Your Therapist: What to Expect in Your First Session

Imagine settling into a comfortable chair, a warm cup of tea cradled in your hands, ready to share your story with someone who’s truly here to listen. Your first therapy session doesn’t have to be scary – think of it more like a gentle conversation with a trusted friend who’s walking alongside you on your healing journey.

Before we get ahead of ourselves, I’d invite you to take a deep breath. It’s natural to feel a mix of emotions – excitement, nervousness, maybe even a touch of fear. Remember, these feelings are like the ripples on a pond; they’re part of the process, not something to push away.

If we meet in person, you’ll be welcomed into a warm, inviting space. It might remind you of a living room or a quiet corner in your favorite café. This is intentional – we want you to feel at ease, like you’re visiting a trusted auntie for a heart-to-heart.

Our first session is about getting to know each other. I’ll ask you what brings you here, but don’t worry if you’re not sure how to put it into words. Sometimes our hearts speak in whispers, and part of our journey together is learning to listen to those soft voices within.

You might wonder what to share.

“Should I start from the beginning? Where is that?”

“Jump to what’s bothering me now?”

There’s no right or wrong way. Your story is like a tapestry – we can start looking at any thread that feels easiest to talk about or more accessible in the moment as a place to start. Over time, we’ll see how they all weave together.

I’ll also explain how our sessions will work – things like confidentiality, scheduling, and what to do between sessions. This is your chance to ask any questions you might have. Remember, there are no silly questions here. Wondering about how often we’ll meet? Curious about the types of therapy we might use? This is your chance to voice those thoughts. Your curiosity is a powerful tool in your healing journey.

As our time comes to a close, we’ll talk about next steps. You might leave with some gentle “homework” – perhaps a reflection exercise or a simple practice to try. Think of these as seeds we’re planting together; with care and attention, they’ll grow into tools for your wellbeing. Remember, therapy is a collaborative process – you’re the expert on your life, and we’re here to support and guide you.

After our session, take some time to reflect.

How did it feel to share your story?

Did any new insights bubble up?

Jot down any thoughts or questions for our next meeting. This reflection is part of the healing process, kind of like tending to a garden between rains.

Remember, therapy is a journey we take together. Like any journey, it has its ups and downs, its smooth paths and rocky trails. But with each step, you’re moving towards healing and growth. And I’ll be right here, walking alongside you, ready with another cup of tea and a listening heart.

Your first therapy session is a step towards healing and growth. It’s an act of self-love and courage. We’re honored to be part of your journey and look forward to sitting down for that first cup of tea with you.

And remember –  just like a good cup of tea, healing takes time to steep. Be patient with yourself. You’ve already taken the most important step by deciding to begin this journey. We’re here to walk alongside you, every step of the way.
